Call for Participation

Interactive technologies can empower patients with information and tools to engage and manage their healthcare process. However, there is growing concern about the quality, reliability, and usability of the information and tools. Consistent with this notion, more evidence is needed to support the role of these tools in improving patient-centered care outcomes delivery, health services efficiency and health outcomes. HCI and healthcare professionals along with patient advocates must be involved in the design and testing of technology-based patient empowerment.

Based on pre-submitted position papers by participants, this one-day ICHI2016 workshop aims at:

  • Building a community of practice.
  • Mapping out the existing needs, challenges and opportunities for improving patient empowerment through information technologies from the patients’ and healthcare providers’ perspectives.
  • Scoping the challenges and key issues for HCI professionals
  • Generating a draft roadmap for HCI for patient empowerment

We invite HCI and healthcare professionals along with patient advocates to submit 2-4 page position papers. Position papers could be studies, projects and designs, evidence and opinions regarding of patient empowerment interactive technologies. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Roles, responsibilities, and collaboration of stakeholders
  • The role and impact of specific patient empowerment technologies on health services efficiency and health outcomes
  • Phenomena surrounding HCI in patient empowerment
  • User research, design, and testing methodologies
  • Design principles and guidelines
  • Lessons learned and critiques

We also invite authors to submit 2-3 examples of patient empowerment technologies. Those can include screen-shots or other descriptions of existing or in development or conceptual interactive technologies. Submissions should be sent as .pdf to patientempowerment.chi@gmail.com. Participants will be selected based on the contribution of their position papers to the range of issues and challenges. At least one author of each accepted position paper must register and attend the workshop. Please indicate which author will attend the workshop.
